Margherita Hut

Valle D'aosta - Monte Rosa / two days

Margherita Hut

The ascent to Capanna Margherita is a journey between sky and ice, an experience that leaves a lasting mark on the heart. Setting off in the silence of dawn, the first steps on the glacier echo in the crisp, thin air. The sun rises behind the peaks, painting the untouched snow in shades of pink, while the gaze wanders across endless ridges. Every step is both struggle and wonder: breath shortens, the heart pounds, yet the sight of the refuge in the distance fuels the will to continue. The final stretch is a challenge, a battle against fatigue and altitude. Then, at last, Capanna Margherita appears like a dream suspended in the sky. From the highest hut in Europe, the world unfolds beneath you, and exhaustion fades into the pure emotion of having touched the sky.

Meeting Point: Gather at the lift departure area in Staffal (Gressoney) for a gear check and briefing.

Take the lifts up to Punta Indren (3,270 m), then start the hike towards Rifugio Città di Mantova (3,498 m), which takes about 1 hour on foot, or continue directly to Capanna Gnifetti (3,647 m), a hike of approximately 2.5 hours from Punta Indren.

Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

Elevation gain: 400 m
Ascent time: 2-3 hours

Day 2

Wake-up call, breakfast, and departure from Rifugio Città di Mantova or Capanna Gnifetti.

Wearing crampons, the ascent begins across the glacier towards Piramide Vincent and Cristo delle Vette (Balmenhorn). Continuing beneath Corno Nero, Ludwigshöhe, and Parrot, the route leads to Colle del Lys (4,250 m). From there, a slight descent traverse beneath Punta Parrot brings you to the base of Punta Gnifetti. A final ascending traverse and a short, steep climb lead to Capanna Margherita.

The descent follows the same route back to the starting refuge, then down to the parking area via the lifts.

Elevation gain: 900 m
Ascent/descent time: 7-9 hours
